Finding the right vocal exercises for your voice can be a long and tiresome process.
When you are not exactly sure what to listen for, or which sensations to pay attention to, it really does feel like an up-hill battle!
Your voice can produce so many different sounds, or tones. The question is, which are the best for singing? And why does it make me so tense?!
Firstly, invest in a microphone and begin to record yourself.
Your voice sounds much different to the listeners than what it does to yourself.
Record onto a tape or CD, and critique yourself.
This is the only way to really know what you are sounding like. An even better solution is to use a microphone with some headphones, so you can hear yourself as you sing.
This way, you know when you are sounding good or bad, and can adjust accordingly.
Secondly, seek proper training.
This is the most crucial thing that could be the difference to you fulfilling your potential as a singer.
Unfortunately, not everyone with the 'singing teacher' label can really help you to sing.
Many singing teachers teach old-and-tired vocal exercises that don't get the most out of your voice.
If you find yourself unable to increase your vocal range and tone dramatically, you are missing out (unless you already have fantastic range and tone!).
I went through many vocal instructors, and none of them could take my voice to where I wanted it.
This is the reason I began looking online for answers. I was pleased with what I discovered...
For the first few years of singing, I was really interested in trying to increase my vocal range.
I tried so many times, with so many different vocal exercises, but every time I tried to sing a high note, I would break into falsetto.
Every vocal instructor I went to all said the same thing. "Your vocal chords are simply not efficient enough to sing high notes".
Boy.....were they wrong!
One online program in particular has actually added over two whole octaves to my voice!
Here is the method that this program teaches...
I discovered that there are certain sounds that make it much easier to sing high into your range.
It's not particularly nice sounding, but it does make it easier for you to "zip up" your vocal chords, and sing extremely high pitches.
After practicing singing this strange noise over and over, you will get used to how it feels to sing high into your range.
You get used to the sensations that it produces, the way the resonance shifts from your mouth to your head.
The vocal chords become more efficient and begin to "zip up" automatically.
This program then moves onto some slightly harder vocal exercises.
Singing this new exercise may have once been an impossibility, but with the previous vocal exercises, your chords have been conditioned to engage correctly, zipping up as you sing higher.
This makes it much easier to do this second vocal exercise, which will lead onto another, slightly harder exercise again.
The purpose of the using these exercises is to condition your vocal chords to function correctly.
Once this happens, the other important factors, such as breathing and resonance, seem to follow quite naturally.
The process also concentrates on using special vocal exercises that condition your larynx (voice box) to sit still while you sing.
This maximizes your tone quality and also cancels out the swallowing muscles that interfere with the tone making process, which causes you much unwanted tension.
