In this video lesson you will learn some singing exercises to improve range fast.
The singing exercise is a little bit strange as you will see in the video.
Basically it requires you to put your thumb under your jaw and use the sound "MMM" to go up in your range. The other crucial part of the exercise is to "think" that you're singing down into the note.
That sounds a little funny, but the video demonstrates this very well.
The reason this works is twofold.
When you have your thumb under your jaw you can feel if your swallowing muscles are getting tight, or staying relaxed. One of the most important things you can do for your singing is learn how to sing with your swallowing muscles nice and relaxed.
So if you are doing the exercise and you feel them tighten up, just play
around with it and see if you can relax them and still get the note.
The more you practice this the easier it will get. On top of that, your
voice will start sounding much better as these swallowing muscles are
one of the things that blocks your natural tone. Free them up and more
of your voice will come through.
The second thing that helps
this exercise is this idea of "singing down into the note". See,
normally when you're going for your high notes, you will almost try and
sing up to it. This is almost certainly going to set off your swallowing
muscles, which puts everything out of place. The result is your high
notes will be extremely hard to hit.
But when you are
deliberately singing "down into the note", you won't feel the need to
"reach" for the note. Because of this it's much easier to keep your
swallowing muscles relaxed, and hitting the note is much more
effortless.
It's a mental tweak and sounds a little tricky when
you hear the idea for the first time. But watch the video and practice
it and you'll get it. You'll know when you've got it because singing
high notes will become much, much easier!
Practice makes perfect and it is certainly the case when looking to extend your range.
In singing, you will usually have a middle range where things are fairly easy. However if you want to get into the higher parts of your range, everything must be much more balanced. This is where these singing exercises to improve range come into play.
But with a little practice you will definitely get there. So practice the exercise in the video above and enjoy the advances you make. Also, if you want to take things much further with your voice, click here and take our premium video series from "coach to the stars" Roger Burnley.
